Laser hair removal: a complete guide to your first session
Everything you need to know before your first laser hair removal session: how to prepare, what happens in the room and how to care for your skin afterwards.
Have you been thinking about ditching the razor and wax for a while? Laser hair removal is one of the most effective ways to reduce unwanted hair in the long term. Like any aesthetic treatment, though, results depend heavily on preparation and a proper protocol. Here's what to expect at your first visit.
How it works, in short
The laser emits light that is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair. At Signature we use a 4-wavelength diode laser (PZ Laser Ice Pro Max), which can be better adapted to each skin and hair type. The energy turns into heat and affects the follicle, reducing its ability to grow a new hair. Because hair grows in cycles, several sessions are needed to catch each follicle in its active growth phase.
Laser hair removal isn't a "one-visit" treatment — it's a protocol. Patience is the best friend of beautiful results.
Consultation and patch test
Your first appointment always starts with a conversation. We'll talk about:
- your skin phototype and hair colour;
- medication, skin conditions or allergies;
- recent sun exposure and your skincare habits;
- the areas you'd like to treat and your expectations.
Then we do a patch test on a small area to see how your skin reacts and set the right parameters.
How to prepare
- Shave the area about 24 hours before. The laser needs the follicle intact, so avoid waxing, tweezing or epilating for at least 4 weeks prior.
- Avoid sun and self-tanner for 2 weeks before your session.
- Come with clean skin — no creams, oils, deodorant or make-up on the area.
- Let us know if you've started any new medication or are pregnant.
What happens during the session
You'll wear protective glasses, and your skin is cleansed and prepared. The device is passed methodically over the area; most clients describe the sensation as mild warmth or a quick snap. Timing depends on the area: a few minutes for underarms, up to an hour for full legs.
Aftercare
Slight redness for a few hours is normal. For maximum comfort:
- apply a soothing cream and avoid intense heat (sauna, gym) for 24–48 hours;
- use SPF 50 on exposed areas;
- don't pluck the hairs that start shedding in the following days — it's a sign the treatment is working.
How many sessions will I need?
Usually between 6 and 10 sessions, 4–8 weeks apart, depending on the area, phototype and hair type. After the protocol, occasional maintenance sessions keep the result.
